To the Editor:
The Editorial Commentary of July 30 (“The Politics of Productivity”) divined that “the president’s theme implies that success is a matter of luck.” I cannot find the implication. There is the clear statement that success depends on the support of “this unbelievable American system” and “our individual initiative.” Nothing is implied about luck other than the luck we all enjoy by living in America, whether we are successful or not.

The editorial also said, “The citizens, especially including the high-income citizens who pay most of the taxes, built the nation’s communal property.” Really? I’ve never seen Warren Buffett operate a crane or Jamie Dimon spread asphalt or Mark Zuckerberg hang from a scaffold to paint the Golden Gate Bridge.
